August: When is it time to change my brakes?

There are many signs that will tell a driver when it's time to change their brakes. At times even though we hear and feel the signs we wait. This can cost you hundreds, if not thousands of extra dollars in repair when all you needed was a simple brake job.

How to tell when it's time for new brakes:

•  One way to determine if it's time to change your brake pads is too look at the fluid level in the master cylinder on your vehicle. If you are unsure of where you master cylinder is located please refer to your owner's manual. When the fluid is low that means the piston that depresses the caliper (the thing that holds your brake pads)  is using a lot of your brake fluid to depress the pad to your rotor (the piece is attached to the axle)  to stop the vehicle. This is one way to determine if its time, keep in mind low master cylinder fluid may indicate more than just one issue.

• Another sign is squeaking while you are driving, if you turn the radio down and listen closely you can hear a squeal coming from your brakes that means it's time to see your service advisor. That doesn't mean that the brakes are gone it is just an indicator that it is installed on the brakes that lets you know it's time to have them looked at and possibly replaced.

• If you hear grinding while using your brakes your should immediately go to your service provider. At this time you have little to no brake pads left and you are grinding parts together that shouldn't be touching each other. This is where your cost of repair escalates because the lack of a quality pad separating the caliper from the rotor will cause those parts to become damaged and will result in them needing to be replaced.

Like we have said in other Shop Talk's being aware of your vehicle is very important and brakes are no exception. Knowing the signs can save you hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars in repair. Make sure that if you are having these issues that you go get your vehicle checked out at your local service department before the issue escalates.

March: Getting Your Car Ready For A Spring Trip

Each month we sit down with Jim to get tips and tricks to make sure our cars are performing properly and to answer any questions our readers may have.

Spring is a great time to get out with your family and friends to do some traveling. Maybe it's to town lake, the river, or places outside the state. Whatever the case may be it is always important to make sure you are properly prepared before taking off on your trip no matter the distance. This month Jim has some great tips to make sure that you car is in top shape before heading out.

Jim: "Before heading out on a trip there are a few preparations that everyone should make so that they can have a nice, safe vacation. Keep in mind almost everything that I'm about to mention is covered in our 27-PT inspection that comes with any South Point KIA service."

·         Check and top off all fluid

           - Fluids include oil, windshield wiper fluid, transmission, differential, and radiator.

           - Fluids can be added or changed by South Point KIA (speak with the dealer for more details)

·         Inspect hoses and belts

                - Losing a belt or having a damaged hose can destroy a vacation to inspect your hoses and belts, first make sure your car has been off for at least an hour and run your fingers along the fan belt in the front and the hoses around your engine. Any cracks, tears, or holes are a good sign that you need to have it replaced, these replacements will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Below is a picture of what a damage belt looks like, these problems should be fixed immediately.

Examine Your Tires

·         Inspect your tires for holes and tread wear; if you are unsure if a place on your tire is leaking spray Windex on the spot in question. If it bubbles that is the sign there is a leak and it's time to either get it patched or the tire replaced.Be  Be sure to examine your spare tire tread as well (having a blowout and a bad spare tire is not a good thing) also having a can of fix a flat or its equivalent handy is a good idea.

When inspecting the tread turn a penny upside down and if you can see the top of Lincolns head it's time to change the tires out.

Jim: “Having properly functioning brakes are important for the safety of you and the others around you. Letting brake pads wear down too far can cause serious damage to your braking system and ultimatly cost you much more money than the cost of getting the pads replaced.”

 

Jim: "Becoming self aware about your brakes can save you a lot of time and money, the tips below should always be in your mind when analyzing your brake performance."

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you have any of the problems below please schedule a time to speak with a service adviser and get the problems fixed immediately. 

 

 

• The brake warning light comes on.
• Your car pulls to one side when pressing on the brakes; properly functioning brakes should allow you to stop straight.
• Your car jerks to a stop when you press the brakes
• You have to pump the brakes to get them to work right.
• You brakes grind uninterrupted and you hear a loud metallic noise when you press down on them.
• You see fluid leaks around any wheel or in the engine compartment near the master cylinder.

Jim: "Most of these problems can be found before any serious damage is done by getting a free brake inspection from your local dealer."
